About Myself

My name is Jaime Maltez, I have been teaching music for over 23 years and I currently provide private lessons for Guitar, Piano and beginner Bass.
From a very young age I had the desire and passion to learn a musical instrument and make it part of my life. At the age of eight I began taking private guitar lessons with various teachers. I was learning at such an accelerated pace that, I had to replace my guitar teachers three times once I had reached and surpassed their knowledge of the instrument.

After playing for four years and having already replaced teachers too often, it was time for me to find myself a guitar teacher with a much deeper knowledge of the instrument. It was at this point in my life when a more serious learning journey began with Flamenco guitarist, Juan Tomas. At the age of thirteen, I studied privately with him for over five years. At this point in time, I also started taking private piano lessons with a different teacher.

I took private piano lessons for over five years with Pianist, Arina Streminsky, who with I also studied Music Theory and Harmony. During my first year of music studies at York University, Arina took me on as a teacher at her music school "Wonder Music School" located in Richmond Hill. I held a teaching position at her school for over ten years. After teaching at her school for a lengthy period of time, I decided to leave the school and branch out on my own taking the music venture into my own hands.

My studies on the guitar were primarily focussed on the Classical guitar, nonetheless, other music genres were also covered such as Jazz, Flamenco Rock and some Latin Folk music. With many years of private lessons, my music performance skills were taken to a much higher professional level, by performing at recitals and special gatherings where I was able to expose myself to a greater audience. Furthermore, throughout my private studies I gained experience performing with trios, duets and also with a Chamber orchestra. In addition, I was able to study some Spanish Guitar (Flamenco) and I was able to do a few Flamenco performances with few music colleagues.

After five years of intense music learning, my goals were now to train and get into the faculty of Music at York University. I applied for an audition to enter York University's music program and was accepted and considered as a candidate for a scholarship. After five years of music studies at York University, I graduated and received my Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with Honours (BFA) in Music Performance and have since been working full time as a private music teacher.

I have also been doing private and public performances for family gatherings and special functions such as, weddings, anniversaries and birthdays. I was able to do few public performances at York University for the Spanish Resource Center to help promote the Spanish culture and language. The repertoire for these performances included some Flamenco songs, Spanish traditional songs, and some other Latin Folk music. My goal is now to teach each student and help them achieve their goals and dreams as musicians.
